Diese Hochgeschwindigkeits-Switches bieten unter Vermeidung der höheren Kosten und Komplexität eines vollständig verwalteten Layer-2-Switches Verwaltungsfunktionen auf Einstiegsniveau.
Der Cisco SLM2008 Smart Switch mit 8 Gigabit-Ports (Abbildung 1) ist hervorragend für den Einsatz in Konferenzräumen, Laboren, Versand-/Warenannahmeabteilungen sowie für Arbeitsgruppen in den Bereichen Marketing, Design und audiovisuelle Projekte geeignet. Die acht 10/100/1000-Mbit/s-Ports (Gigabit Ethernet) ermöglichen es Unternehmen, mit anderen Gigabit-Geräten (Server, Workstations und Netzwerkspeicher) über das Netzwerk Verbindungen aufzubauen, um ohne Beeinträchtigung der Unterstützung von 10/100-Mbit/s-Clients bandbreitenintensive Dateien zu übertragen.

Der Cisco SLM2008 unterstützt den PoE-Standard IEEE 802.3af, d. h. die Stromversorgung erfolgt über einen designierten PD-Port (PD, Powered Device) oder ein externes Netzteil. Somit sind Unternehmen in der Lage, den Switch auch an Orten ohne Steckdose - wie an Decken oder Wänden - zu installieren. Der Cisco SLM2008 schützt das Netzwerk mithilfe von IEEE 802.1Q VLANs und IEEE 802.1XPortauthentifizierung. In Umgebungen, in denen IP-Multicast-Anwendungen zum Einsatz kommen,

weist der Switch bei Bedarf nur jenen Ports Datenverkehr zu, die ihn mithilfe der Identifikation
des Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP Snooping) angefordert haben. Zusätzliche
QoS-Funktionen (QoS, Quality of Service) wie IEEE 802.1p, Verfahren zur Priorisierung von
IP-Datenpaketen (Differentiated Services Code Point, DSCP) sowie vier Hardware-Warteschlangen sichern die Qualität von Echtzeitanwendungen wie Sprache oder Video. Die Verwaltung und Konfiguration des Cisco SLM2008 sind dank einer übersichtlichen Browser-Benutzeroberfläche denkbar einfach und stellen daher auch für kleine Unternehmen ohne IT-Personal oder technisch versierte Mitarbeiter keine Schwierigkeit dar.
