Avaya was founded on 2 October 2000 and strengthened its position in the German market by being acquired by the German telecommunications company Tenovis in 2004.

Avaya takes over parts of Nortel
After Nortel Networks filed for bankruptcy in 2009, a bidding process was conducted for various parts of the company. Avaya eventually acquired Nortel's enterprise solutions business, including enterprise communications systems.
