GPON ist ein Glasfasersystem das die ITU im Jahr 2003 mit der Bezeichnung "G.984 Gigabit capable passive optical networks" standardisiert hat. Eine Variante davon ist GEPON. Ebenfalls von der IEEE standardisiert und hauptsächlich in Asien im Einsatz. GPON ist der Nachfolger von ATM-PON und BPON (G.983). Auch die Standards stammen aus der Feder der ITU.\n\nGPON ist ein passives Glasfasernetz, dass keine teuren aktiven Komponenten benötigt. GPON stützt sich bei der Glasfaserinfrastruktur auf eine Punkt-zu-Mehrpunkt-Topologie. Von einem zentralen Switch "OLT-Optical Line Terminal" aus, werden die Teilnehmer ONU "Optical Network Unit" versorgt. Die einzelnen Teilnehmer "ONU´s" werden über passive optische Splitter bedient, die wie Prismen funktionieren. Das Lichtsignal wird an mehrere Ausgänge gestreut. Über den Splitter können mehrere Benutzer 4/8/16/32/64 oder 128 Nutzer eine Bandbreite von 2,48 GBit/s (rund 2,5 GBit/s) im Downstream und 1,24 GBit/s (rund 1,25 GBit/s) im Upstream teilen.
