Die Cisco SPA / SIP-Portfolio ermöglicht die Bereitstellung von verschiedenen Schnittstellen (Packet over SONET / SDH [POS], ATM, Ethernet, etc.) über die gleiche Schnittstelle Prozessor.

Gigabit-Ethernet-Schnittstellen werden häufig für die Zusammenschaltung Routern oder anderen Geräten in einem zentralen Büro oder Rechenzentrum oder in einem Metropolitan-Area Network (MAN) verwendet. Zusätzlich zu den zwei kleinen Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP)-Anschlüsse für Gigabit Ethernet basiert, zwei weitere integrierte RJ-45 Ports sind vorhanden auf dem 2-Port-Gigabit-Ethernet-SPA, Version 2. Eine Kombination dieser Gigabit-Ethernet-Ports erlaubt ist, beschränkt sich auf insgesamt 2 Gigabit Ethernet Ports (sowohl Kupfer, sowohl optisch, oder einer Kupfer-und einem optischen).
