Der Cisco Fabric Extender für HP BladeSystem (Modell B22HP) ist eine Erweiterung der Cisco Nexus Switch-Struktur für HP Server. Logisch funktioniert der Cisco Fabric Extender als Remote-Adapter eines übergeordneten Cisco Nexus 5000-Switches. Der Fabric Extender und der übergeordnete Nexus-Switch bilden dabei ein verteiltes, modulares System. Der Cisco Fabric Extender für HP BladeSystem leitet den Datenverkehr an einen übergeordneten Cisco Nexus-Switch über acht Ethernet-Uplinks mit je 10 Gbit/s weiter. Kostengünstige Uplink-Verbindungen mit bis zu 10 Metern können über Twinaxial-Kupferkabel eingerichtet werden. Bei längeren Verbindungen mit bis zu 100 Metern können auch optionale Fabric Extender-Transceiver verwendet werden. Standardmäßige SFP+-Glasfaserkabel mit 10 Gbit/s werden ebenfalls unterstützt. Downlinks für jeden Server zeichnen sich durch eine automatische Aushandlung aus und können mit allen HP Ethernet- und CNA-Modulen eingesetzt werden. Dies ermöglicht die Verwendung zahlreicher Ethernet-, FCoE- oder iSCSI-Verbindungen. Durch die nahtlose Übertragung des gesamten Datenverkehrs über den Nexus 5000 kann der Datenverkehr gemäß den über den Nexus-Switch der Serie 5000 etablierten Richtlinien mit einem einzigen, zentralen Verwaltungspunkt gesteuert werden.
