Nexus 5000 komplettiert das bestehende Switching-Portfolio von Cisco und treibt den Wandel heutiger Rechenzentren in eine virtualisierte Serviceumgebung voran. Der neue Low-Latency-Switch adressiert insbesondere die Notwendigkeit zur I/O-Konsolidierung im Access-Layer, zum Beispiel in dicht gepackten Server-Racks. Verkabelung und Management vereinfachen sich dramatisch. Stromverbrauch und laufende Kosten sinken, die Verfügbarkeit steigt. Nexus 5000 ist das erste Switching-Produkt von Cisco, das schon heute Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) unterstützt und damit den Aufbau einer Unified Fabric ermöglicht. Unified Fabric vereint Server- und Storage-Netzwerke zu einer gemeinsamen, einheitlich administrierbaren Plattform, die den Weg frei macht für die umfassende Virtualisierung sämtlicher Dienste und Ressourcen im Rechenzentrum.
