The solutions are designed for professional use in networks of companies and organisations. A Cisco firewall is designed for the transition between two networks, usually between an internal LAN and the public WAN. There, the firewall filters incoming and outgoing traffic according to the configuration. Cisco firewalls can be freely configured and offer functions such as access control lists and anti-spam mechanisms. In addition, the systems support packet analysis for use as an intrusion detection system (IDS) or intrusion prevention system (IPS) and can be used to set up a VPN. The bandwidth of the hardware firewalls ranges from systems for small and medium-sized enterprises to solutions for data centres as well as similar central telecommunications nodes.
