Cisco 100 Megabit Transceiver

The Cisco 100 Megabit transceivers are modules for use in switches and routers from the manufacturer that have a modular uplink port. The 100 megabit transceivers from Cisco have the SFP format (Small Form-Factor Pluggable). They support hot-swapping, i.e. the exchange of modules during operation.

There are Cisco 100 megabit transceivers for copper and fibre optic cables. The modules also differ depending on the cables used. Cisco offers 100 megabit transceivers for SMF (single-mode fibre) and for MMF (multi-mode fibre) cables. MMF cables allow connection lengths of up to two kilometres. With SMF cables and the matching Cisco 100 megabit transceivers, on the other hand, distances of up to 80 kilometres are possible. For transmission via fibre optic cables, connectors of type Dual-LC as well as Single-LC are used. Cat 5 twisted pair cables without shielding (UTP) are suitable for copper networks.

With these properties, the Cisco 100 Megabit transceivers can be used for setting up media converters in networks. Thus, the transition from copper cables to fibre optic cables is possible, which then take over the transmission between two points, such as network nodes, over longer distances.
